One platform for every site, every language, every market
An open source solution that handles complex multisite architectures efficiently and scales with new markets and languages without additional licensing costs.
How it works
Ten sites don't have to mean ten times the work
Most multisite setups fail at the same point: content gets duplicated, editorial teams work in separate systems, and adding a new market means starting from scratch. Sulu's Webspace model solves this architecturally. Every site is an independent Webspace with its own identity, but they all run on the same installation, share the same asset library, and are managed from the same admin.
Languages work the same way. Adding a new locale is a configuration change, not a project. Editors work in a consistent interface regardless of how many languages are active. Content that is the same across markets (assets, shared elements, global snippets) doesn't need to be maintained separately for each locale.
The result is a digital portfolio that scales without proportional overhead. Ten sites don't mean ten times the work. Fifteen languages don't mean fifteen separate editorial workflows.
Getting started
From configuration file to live Multisite Platform in four steps
Define your sites and languages
A developer configures each Webspace and its available languages in a versioned config file. No database changes, no admin UI required for setup. The configuration travels with your codebase.
Structure your content
Editors manage each site through its own page tree, in the languages defined for that Webspace. Shared content (assets, snippets, global elements) is available across all sites automatically.
Handle translations
Editors translate content locale by locale, with independent publishing states per language. Language fallbacks and shadow pages keep every site coherent even when translations are in progress.
Go live
Sulu generates sitemaps, hreflang tags, and canonical URLs per locale automatically. SEO is handled by the platform. Your team focuses on content, not on configuration.
Key Capabilities
Nothing duplicated across sites or languages
Every site as its own independent presence, managed from a single admin. Sulu's Webspace model gives each site a dedicated domain, URL structure, page tree, and design while sharing the same installation, asset library, and user management across all of them.
- Each Webspace has its own page tree, URL structure, and design
- All Webspaces share the same installation, asset library, and admin interface
- Configuration is file based and versioned with the codebase
- Templates and assets are reusable across Webspaces
- Adding a new site requires a configuration block, not a new project
Add any locale with a single configuration change. Every Webspace supports any number of languages and regional variants, with language-specific URL strategies defined in the same versioned config file as the rest of the site structure.
- Unlimited number of locales per Webspace (en, de, fr, de-at, de-ch, and more)
- Regional variants and dialects supported out of the box
- Language-specific URL strategies: domain.fr, domain.com/fr, fr.domain.com
- Non-translatable fields for content that stays the same across locales
- No database changes required to add a new language
Keep every site coherent even when translations are still in progress. Fallbacks and shadow pages let editors publish progressively without leaving gaps in the live site.
- Language fallback serves the closest available locale automatically
- Shadow pages define an explicit fallback for specific content
- Ghost pages act as placeholders for locales not yet translated
- Each locale has its own independent publishing state
- Visitors never see empty pages when a translation is incomplete
Manage the full translation process from within the platform. Sulu supports every stage of a translation workflow, from in-house editing to agency handoff to fully automated translation.
- Independent draft, review, and published states per locale
- XLIFF export and import for external translation agencies
- Automated translations via Sulu.ai including formatting
- Copy content from one locale as a starting point for another
- No content versioning required outside the platform
Search visibility handled by the platform, not by editors. Sulu generates all locale-specific SEO signals automatically so editorial teams can focus on content rather than configuration.
- Automatic sitemaps per locale
- hreflang tags for correct locale signaling to search engines
- Canonical URLs set automatically per page and per locale
- Language-specific metadata managed per page
- Sulu.ai generates meta titles and descriptions from existing content
Define your team structure once and apply it across all sites. Roles, permissions, and access rights are managed in one place and applied consistently across the entire Webspace portfolio.
- Roles and permissions defined once, applied across all Webspaces
- Granular access control per Webspace and per action
- Editors see only the sites and content they are responsible for
- No separate admin instances required as the portfolio grows
- Language-specific permissions supported
Maintain shared content in one place and keep it consistent everywhere. Snippets are centrally managed, multilingual content blocks that can be placed on any page across any Webspace.
- Reusable across all Webspaces and locales
- Each snippet has its own translation per locale
- Ideal for contact information, legal notices, promotional elements, and calls to action
- Changes propagate automatically to every page where the snippet appears
- No copy-paste across sites, no version drift between markets
