Strengthening Sulu's next phase: Eric Meurers joins our Advisory Board
Sulu is evolving — not in what it stands for, but in how it's built and sustained.
Open source remains at the core. That hasn't changed. What's evolving is how we build a sustainable business around it.
Over the years, our service-driven work has shaped Sulu into a system capable of handling complex content models, custom business logic, and long-term platform requirements. At the same time, the limits of a service-driven model have become visible. Services don't scale the way products do — and that makes it harder to invest consistently in the platform's long-term evolution.
So our direction is clear: we're evolving Sulu beyond a CMS — toward a broader platform approach around structured content, assets, and workflows. The harder question is how we get there, especially in increasingly complex, enterprise-driven environments.
From conversation to collaboration
This isn't a new conversation. It's one that has been evolving over time — through projects, partner discussions, and events like Sulu:Touch. One of those conversations was with Eric Meurers.
What started as an exchange around product thinking, agency dynamics, and long-term direction quickly developed into something more — the kind of conversation that doesn't end when the event is over.
We're glad to take the next step and formally welcome Eric to our advisory board.
Who is Eric Meurers
Eric Meurers brings more than two decades of experience in building and growing digital businesses.
He founded Interlutions in 1999 and developed it into an established digital agency, which later became part of the OPEN Digital Group. Along the way, he was involved in building and scaling multiple companies — including the SEO agency SUMO and the DACH operations of SensioLabs, the company behind the Symfony framework.
Over time, this wasn't just about building companies, but about understanding how ecosystems evolve, how technologies mature, how agencies grow, and how markets shift.
In 2024, after more than 25 years in operational leadership roles, Eric made the conscious decision to step back from day-to-day business and focus on strategic advisory work. Today, he works as a sparring partner for a small number of agencies and software companies, supporting them on questions of positioning, growth, marketing, and long-term direction.
I'm thrilled to join the Sulu team and reconnect with the Symfony community. As the demand for enterprise open-source solutions grows, I look forward to showing our partners how Sulu can be their go-to platform. Let’s discuss how we can drive this growth together!
A connection that goes back further than you might think
Our paths have crossed more than once over the years. From the early Symfony days to agency work with different CMS systems — including Sulu — and through our partner network, there has always been a connection between Eric's world and ours.
What makes this collaboration particularly valuable isn't just Eric's track record, but the perspective he brings. He combines deep roots in the Symfony and PHP ecosystem with a strong understanding of the agency landscape, partner models, and how software companies grow beyond their initial setup. Just as importantly, he brings a clear view on marketing and sales — areas that become increasingly relevant as Sulu continues to grow beyond its core developer audience.
What Eric will focus on
As part of our advisory board, Eric acts as a sparring partner — contributing to discussions around strategy, partner development, and positioning.
A particular focus will be on strengthening our partner program, expanding our reach beyond the existing ecosystem, and positioning Sulu more clearly in a market that continues to evolve.
This isn't about changing what Sulu is. It's about sharpening how we communicate it, and how we keep developing it sustainably.
Looking ahead
Some conversations don't end — they evolve. What started at Sulu:Touch has turned into an ongoing exchange, and we're glad Eric is now part of it.
If you'd like to sit down with Eric and me — we'd be glad to set up a session. Drop us a line at hello@sulu.io and we'll find a time.
We're looking forward to continuing the conversation — with Eric, and with all of you.
